Measurement Guide

Measurement Guide

Get the perfect fit for your space with our simple, step-by-step measurement guide—ensure your Velvet & Timber furniture complements your room without sizing surprises.

1. Essential Tools to Prepare

  • Metal tape measure (most accurate for furniture sizing)
  • Painter’s tape (to mark furniture footprint)
  • Notebook/phone (to record measurements)
  • Helper (optional, for measuring large rooms or tight spaces)

2. Step-by-Step Measuring Process

Step 1: Measure Your Room

  • Length & Width: Stand in opposite corners of the room and measure the distance between them (record in inches). Note any obstacles (windows, doorways, radiators) that might affect furniture placement.
  • Ceiling Height: Measure from floor to ceiling (relevant for tall pieces like high-back chairs or cabinets).
  • Pathway Clearance: Mark main walkways (e.g., between sofa and TV, entry to room) and ensure at least 30” of clear space for easy movement.

Step 2: Measure Entry Points (Critical for Delivery)

  • Doorways: Measure the width and height of all entry doors (front door, hallway doors, room doors). For French doors, measure the total width when both are open.
  • Hallways & Stairwells: Measure hallway width and ceiling height. For stairwells, note the width, step depth, and any turns (tight corners may affect large furniture delivery).
  • Elevator (If Applicable): Measure elevator interior width, depth, and height (for high-rise deliveries).

Step 3: Visualize Furniture Placement

  • Use painter’s tape to mark the exact width and depth of your desired furniture on the floor. This helps you see how it fits with existing pieces (e.g., coffee table in front of sofa, chair next to window).
  • Ensure at least 2-3” of space between furniture and walls (prevents fabric damage and improves airflow) and 18-24” between seating and coffee tables (for comfortable access).

Step 4: Cross-Check with Product Dimensions

  • Refer to individual product pages for exact dimensions (width, depth, height, seat height).
  • Key questions to confirm:
    • Will the furniture’s width fit in your marked floor space?
    • Is the furniture’s depth narrow enough to pass through entry doors?
    • For sofas/sectionals: Will the longest module fit through hallways/stairwells?

3. Common Furniture Size Guidelines (North American Standards)

  • Sofas: 3-seater (72-96” wide), 2-seater (60-72” wide), loveseat (48-60” wide)
  • Armchairs: 28-34” wide x 30-36” deep (fits most living rooms/bedrooms)
  • Coffee Tables: 30-48” wide x 18-24” deep (should be 1-2” lower than sofa seat height)
  • TV Stands: Width should be at least 2” wider than your TV (e.g., 75” TV needs 77”+ stand)

4. Troubleshooting Sizing Concerns

  • Furniture too large for entryways?: Contact our support team—some pieces (e.g., sofa legs) can be removed for delivery. We also offer white-glove delivery with professional handling for tight spaces.
  • Unsure about room fit?: Email your room dimensions, entryway measurements, and desired furniture to pKnelson_reginastsP1p@aol.com. Our design team will provide a custom fit recommendation.
  • Need exact product dimensions?: Check the “Specifications” tab on each product page or contact us for a detailed size sheet.

5. Pro Tips for Accurate Measuring

  • Measure twice to avoid errors (small discrepancies can lead to big issues!).
  • Account for baseboards, moldings, or door casings—add 1-2” to your measurements to ensure clearance.
  • For sectional sofas: Measure each module individually (not just the total width) to confirm delivery feasibility.
